Musical rhetoric in baroque music: an overview of theoretical principles

Abstract

This paper deals with the vital influence of Rhetoric over musical composition during the Baroque period. In order to get a full understanding of baroque composition and interpretation, this study urges to know the main rhetoric devices, which were applied by the composers in Music, by means of the review of the most important primary and secondary sources. The centuries-old relation between both disciplines is explained, besides the origin of Rhetoric as a téchne, the status of the issue of Musical Rhetoric during Baroque, theory of the affects and implications of Rhetoric in instrumental music.
