The typological roots of Herculano’s reenactment of the locus “historia magistra vitae”

Main Article Content

Abstract

This article seeks to deep into the character of the locus “historia magistra vitae” employed by European writers during the Nineteenth Century. It’s focus is the thought of Portuguese poet, novelist and historian Alexandre Herculano. Like many of his contemporaries, he recovered the latin maximum and employed it in different parts of his work. The main argument of this paper is that the locus underwent a radical transfiguration under the thought of authors like Herculano, due to the influence of romantic-historicist thought and the typological-Christian substratum implicit in it. Thus, from the unprecedented point of view of romantic historicism, “history master of life” would no longer refer to the exemplarity of the actions of an immutable human nature, but pointed to the management of the “nation” as an enthelechy.
