Questioning and silence in novels by Vergílio Ferreira

Abstract
In the narrative discourse of the novels Para Sempre and Cartas a Sandra by Vergilio Ferreira, the 20th-century Portuguese existentialist writer, a rhetoric of silence is strongly present. The protagonist narrates his story in each of the lyrical novels, but from different moments, either as a grieving old husband or after his own death. In both cases, it confronts himself with the finitude of the total human being in body and soul. There is emphasis on the desire to understand his existence in the flux of conscience, where memory and imagination of his experiences are merged, and his deceased wife resurfaces. The repetition of the word silence and rhetorical questions emphasize the inaudible word, the unspeakable nature of feelings, and the mystery of life. The dissemination of these figures in an unfinished, fragmentary, discontinuous, and dispersed narrative of thoughts and memories revived and reinvented in the present, enhances consecutive silences that urge the reader toward a profound hermeneutic communion that completes the ineffable of existential transcendence.
