Persuasion and Political Discourse: A corpus-driven triggers recognition

Abstract
This article is focused on analyzing the political discourse of Mexico’s last three presidents. The objective is to identify linguistic patterns related to the phenomenon of persuasion. A corpus of 15 presidential speeches was compiled and processed by using Corpus Linguistics tools to detect lexical triggers associated with psychological principles of persuasion. The findings describe how linguistic information is used to create a persuasive communication, and highlight differences among the presidents’ speeches, suggesting underlying motivations. The results offer an interdisciplinary approach to the phenomenon of persuasion in Mexican political discourse.
