On some semantic relations in the elaboration of arguments: polysemy, homonymy, hyponymy and hyperonymy and meronymy and holonymy
Main Article Content
Abstract
This article aims to answer the following questions: (i) Do semantic relations such as polysemy, homonymy, hyponymy, hyperonymy, meronymy and holonymy contribute or not to the elaboration of arguments? (ii) What would that contribution be? In answer to question (i) it will be stated that polysemy and homonymy do not contribute because by their nature they tend to create ambiguities, which is why it is preferable to avoid them in argumentation. However, it is also maintained that the argumentative text serves to delimit and disambiguate the content of these terms when they are included in it. On the other hand, hyponymy and hyperonymy and meronymy and holonymy contribute, either to the compacting of information or to the specification of cases related to a more general term which, due to its meaning, includes them, resulting in the economization of information and a better explanation of the content of the arguments, respectively.
